THE PENANCE OF KING DAVID; PART 1 (A BROKEN SPIRIT AND A CONTRITE HEART) 2 SAMUEL 12:1-20
Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
The issue of PENANCE is very important to God; He does not want to raise children who have no conscience. We can only appease God when we are sorry for our sin; a broken spirit and a contrite heart; that is a heart that seeks repentance; a sorrowful heart (2 Corinthian 7:9-10). David killed Uriah and took his wife and pretended as if nothing happened and God hated that. David has to be punished for his sin despite being the man after God's heart. David was not ready for the PENANCE until God struck his child. 2 Samuel 12:13 (And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. 14 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die). It was actually meant to help him because he would have gone the way of King Saul and said I have sinned against God and left it that way. God wanted him to know how grievous his offence was and to get his attention the child needed to die. I pray for someone reading this message; the grace to recognize your sin before God does, receive it, in Jesus name. If king David showed remorse and entered into PENANCE before Nathan the prophet came with a message from God maybe the child would have been saved. The aim of Satan is to course us to delay in starting our PENANCE so that the judgement will set in; he is called the ancient dragon; he knows the law of God. Please don´t allow him to take advantage of your ignorance. The difference between David and Saul was love; God punished his children that He loved to correct them. Proverbs 19:18 (Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying). 2 Samuel 7:14 (I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: 15 But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. 16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. 17 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David). So, God did not hate you, he loved you so much and he does not want you to lose your throne and your place in heaven that is why He is trying to get your attention and to get you to do the right thing. During that period of Penance David was able to reflect on his action and what he was going to lose and what he had lost. He recognizes what it means if he loses the relationship that he had with God. Let's look at how to go about the prayer using Psalm 51.
Psalm 51:1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
First, you need to recognize how empty you have become and then humble yourself; David was on the floor for complete seven days in fasting and prayers (2 Samuel 12:16-20). The city of Nineveh wore rags and lay in ashes for 3 days with prayer and fasting; and God reversed the judgement against them. Lamentations 3:22 (It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not). You need to ask for mercy and tell God that you are deeply sorry. Mercy will always get God's attention no matter whose person it is coming from. When we ask for mercy we get God to listen to what we have to say. The blind Barthmeaus asked for mercy and Jesus stood still and asked him, what do you want me to do for you? (Mark 10:47-52). David begins to confess his sin and own up to everything he has done. When asking for forgiveness you don't try to justify your action; if you are still trying to tell God the reason why you did what you do; then don't waste your time in PENANCE because you are not ready.
Psalm 51:2( Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest).
Sin stains and creates a gap between us and God; when we are stained by our sin the Spirit of God will depart from us because He said be ye Holy for I am Holy (1 Peter 1:16). Leviticus 20:7(Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God). David knows that he is no longer clean, his spiritual life has been contaminated and thereby cannot secure the presence of God, that's why he quickly pleads for mercy and then asks for cleansing. The blood of Jesus is our hope in this matter; he is there to cleanse us from every unrighteousness. When we go into Penance we take cover in the blood of Jesus against the avengers of blood. The blood of Jesus is our city of refuge (Deuteronomy 19:1-10). He said when I see the blood I will pass over; when we begin to plead the blood of Jesus, he will cleanse our conscience and those evil thoughts that cause people to sin will not enter, it will pass over. Hebrews 10:19(Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water). The main objective of PENANCE is to keep our conscience alive and to do that, the evil conscience needs to be buried.
Have it in your mind that whatever evil you do against anyone you are doing it against God; you don't sin against your fellow human you sin against God who is the judge of all and will judge all your actions. Joseph did not say that he did not want to sin against his master; no, he said how can I do this great wickedness and sin against God? (Genesis 39:9); David says that he has done evil in the sight of God and sin against Him.
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, I know I have sinned against you and done what you considered evil. I have no reason for my action,............. You can fill in the space by mentioning exactly what you have done. I am so sorry Father, I feel so empty, without you there is no me; forgive me my sin and wash me clean with your precious blood; sanctify me holy so that I can be worthy enough to be in your presence. Then follow Psalm 51 step by step. Since we sin every second and everyday; It should be our daily routine but if there is any profound sin; it should be done with fasting and separation.
Note, for you to even feel bad when you offend God, you need to be in a Love relationship with Him. your heart is the connecting link between you and God; he pays attention to those who are in a love relationship with Him. Friends, in case you are not yet in a Love relationship with God, this is your opportunity to enter into it by praying this salvation prayer below and be blessed in Jesus name. I believe you have been blessed with this message; Please, don´t forget to like and share. God bless you.
Lord Jesus, I come to you today, I am a sinner, and I cannot help myself, forgive me my sins, and cleanse me with your precious blood. Deliver me from sin and Satan to serve the living God. Lord Jesus, I accept you as my Lord and saviour. Now I know I am Born Again, Amen.
